Now lets talk about something morbid shall we, so we don’t get too bored with the details.    What is more morbid than an entire CLAN of Scottish Cannibals I ask you??  Well a Clan that is not only cannibals, but incestuous as well of course.  I give you the story of Sawney Beane and his delightful family

Beane was an outcast who took to robbery in an uninhabited region of Galloway; he mercilessly killed all his early victims. Having formed a bond with a woman of equally vicious temperament, they made their home in a cave (now called Bennane Head) situated north of Ballantrae and slaughtered travellers who passed through those parts. In the words of one chronicler: “being destitute of any means of obtaining food, the pair resolved to live on human flesh”.

Over the years, the cave became the lair of a tribe of sons, daughters and grandchildren – all the products of incestuous interbreeding. Since their crimes netted an ample supply of money, members of the clan were, according to some writers, able to visit nearby towns from time to time and purchase essential supplies. There was no reason why any outsiders should look twice at the Beanes who went on these shopping trips. Although the author of the Newgate Calendar portrays the family as half-wild, savage fiends, it is likely that those who ventured into local markets and taverns seemed decidedly ordinary – after all, they were probably respectably dressed in clothes stripped from the bodies of their victims. 

Despite the remoteness of the Beanes’ hideout, the people of Galloway became aware that unlawful killings were taking place in the district. A number of corpses washed up on the seashore; growing public unrest led to a petition being made to the authorities in Edinburgh
